« The Debate | Main | Debate Redux »

FMA DOA

I can't believe it. I wouldn't have predicted it. In fact, it's the last thing I expected, but the House rejected the Federal Marriage Amendment today.

The U.S. House of Representatives, voting less than five weeks before the presidential election, rejected a constitutional amendment backed by President George W. Bush to ban same-sex marriage.

A similar amendment on marriage was withdrawn in the Senate in July when Republican leaders failed to muster the votes needed to bring it to a final vote. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Republican from Texas, said the vote today was intended to force lawmakers to take a position on the issue before the Nov. 2 elections.

Of course the House Majority Hater had to have his say:

"This debate will spill over into the election, and rightfully so,'' DeLay said. He said the amendment would help ensure that children are raised in a home with a mother and father. ``Unfortunately, Peter and Paul can be good fathers, but they can't be a good mother.''

And it wasn't defeated by a majority, it just failed to get the required 2/3 vote.

The measure, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman, fell short of the two-thirds majority required to pass a constitutional amendment. The vote was 227 in favor, 186 against.

Still, I suppose it's a relief that it didn't pass. But Tom Delay can kiss my ... Nevermind. I don't want him that close to me.

I've been out of town and out of the loop. This is the best news I've ever arrived home to.

I don't even care about Tom DeLay.

La, la, la, la, la, I can't hear you (TomDeLay)!
